What is a national federation?
A national federation is a non-profit, democratic organization that deals with the overall development and structure for MMA in a country. Our stated ambition is for each national federation to be approved by the ministry of sports (or the equivalent) and the Olympic committee in their respective country. The responsibilities and activities of a national federation for MMA is much like those of any other sport. The national federation…
…governs, manages and develops the amateur side of the sport. This entails everything from offering coach and referee education to representing MMA with politicians and the sports community, suggesting or protecting legislation regarding MMA and overall ensuring that MMA has a standing in the sports community of the country in question.
…handles questions regarding rules, regulations, safety and so forth. It is a driving force behind ensuring that these areas are developed, communicated, standardized and adapted to the specific needs of the MMA community in the country in question.
…gathers all MMA academies, teams and organizations as members in a democratic forum. It helps the members with practical issues and provides a hub for all those active within MMA in the country, from the recreational to the professional level. The members in turn are the “owners” of the national federation, they are all eligible to vote in the general assembly or the like, and as such have both rights and obligations, much like the national federations have as members in the IMMAF.
…hosts national championships and manages the selection of a national team to participate in the IMMAF world championships.
The core purpose of a national federation is thus not to offer training or host its own events, although that may of course be the case sometimes the focus of the national federation should be on the above mentioned areas. It is an organization consisting of members, and these members are MMA academies, teams and organizations that train, coach and stage competitions.
National federations and professional MMA
Our stated ambition is that each national federation have the right to govern MMA and sanction professional events in countries where there is no functional state controlled governance today. In most parts of the world there is no proper governance of MMA, neither for the sport in general nor for the sanctioning of professional events. The state athletic commissions of the USA are a rarity, and so is the government licence that the Swedish MMA Federation has to govern both amateur and professional MMA. There are also countries (or regions within countries) where MMA is semi-regulated by other sports commissions, which sometimes functions efficiently and in the best interest of MMA, but not always. In the overwhelming majority of countries however MMA is un-regulated with no standards to follow and no common guidelines on safety, refereeing, athletes insurance and so forth. This kind of situation can worst case lead to risky practices and athletes being taken advantage of. The IMMAF is currently working on establishing national federations around the world, thus ensuring safe governance of both amateur and professional MMA in whatever form that suits each individual country.

The IMMAF is composed of autonomous and independent national federations. For an organization to formally represent their country as a member in the IMMAF there needs to be a national federation in place that meets the following requirements:
• It needs to be formally registered as a non-profit organization
• It needs to have statutes
• The statutes need to state that the organization is democratic
• It needs to be registered under a name that contains the country name and mixed martial arts
• It needs to group together the majority of the MMA organizations and clubs throughout the country
• It needs to show the ability to initiate regular national competitions in the near future
If in any country there is more than one such federation, the IMMAF will accept among its members the one officially recognized by the National Olympic Committee or the governmental sport authority of the country in question. If more than one federation meets all the requirements but none have that kind of recognition it comes down to size – which federation that groups together the majority of the MMA organizations and clubs throughout the country.
In countries where there is a need for support on how to found a non-profit, democratic federation the IMMAF provides that through our National Federation Establishment Committee. At the moment the committee is being formed so those who need help will be assigned a contact as soon as all the members of the committee have been appointed and operations are up and running.
There are two kinds of members – Full members and Individual members. If in any country there is no national federation in place to meet the demands of Full membership an individual can be appointed Individual Member of the IMMAF. This individual will thereby temporarily represent the country, with the assignment to establish a national federation. Each Full member is entitled to one (1) vote at the General Assembly whereas Individual Members have no vote. Membership shall be subject to the approval of the Board of Directors and ratified at the time of the next General Assembly.
For more information on membership click here for the IMMAF statutes.
The task of IMMAF is to aid and approve one democratic, non-profit national federation per country thus enabling international competitions in the future. In some countries there already exists such a federation, in others several, in many there are able and devoted professional organizations or individuals ready to put one in place. Hence we initiate talks with all relevant parties in a country, whether one or several, to learn about the country and investigate the best way to move forward. We are working diligently to ensure that the membership process is fair and professional, gathering all the relevant information in order to create the best possible outcome in each country. In countries where there is a need for support on how to found a non-profit, democratic federation the IMMAF will provide that.

Language
At this point in time the IMMAF can unfortunately only process applications in English. So if you don’t speak English we strongly recommend you find a translator. Using internet translation robots only creates misunderstandings and makes it difficult for us to verify information. So we can unfortunately not carry out an application process using internet translation either.

During the late eighties and early nineties many inter-style martial arts tournaments were conducted in the USA, Japan and Brazil. These inter-style vale tudo type tournaments soon came under the scanner of athletic commissions and sports boards and were temporarily banned in many countries because of the no-rules image they were projecting. In some countries these no-rules tournaments were called human cockfighting.
In this decade with the advent of a worldwide system of "Unified" MMA rules and the explosion of MMA reality shows all over the world MMA has become the combat sport of the millennium.
In India the first no-holds-barred event was held in 1985 at Bytco college Nasik Road, Nasik Maharashtra. The event featured fighters from different dojos and gyms and was organized by Ishudo grandmaster Solomon Isaac. The event ended with severe cuts, bruises and broken bones, there was never a similar event held in India after that one but the organizer Solomon Isaac has always been remembered as the true pioneer for no rules fighting in the country. Isaac's son Daniel would later be known as the pioneer of modern Mixed Martial Arts in India.
Between 1998 and 2004 Daniel Isaac along with his team of Indian mma fighters under the banner of "Tigers Gym & Fight Club" competed at many MMA shows across Asia, Europe and Africa. Many of these Indian mma fighters like Alan "The Bull" Fenandes would soon become synonymous with the sport in the years to come.
In 2004, Daniel Isaac, Jitendra Jain, Alan Fenandes, Ryan Thorpe and three other founder members took a proposal to the registrar of societies to form and register an organization under the government of India to supervise the sport of Mixed Martial Arts. After going through a series of changes and change reports the organization finally was registered as the "All India Mixed Martial Arts Association" [ AIMMAA ]
In India the AIMMAA ensures that every promoter / association follows the strict guidelines laid down by the national board for safe practices, officials expertise and integrity and high standards of athlete training. AIMMAA supervises that every event in India covers the mandatory policies of Heath Safety and Sport governance. Under the guidance of state chief delegates and an expert panel of national committee members the AIMMAA continues to unify mixed martial arts and mma fighters under this All-India banner with an effort to provide world class training and know-how to the indian mma community. All events conducted by AIMMAA in India are under direct permission from the Ministry of Sports, Govt of India. In India the AIMMAA follows the policy "To protect the fighters and promote the sport"
